Why is a breast revision necessary?

A breast revision may be necessary for a number of reasons, including:

Increase or decrease the size of your breasts

In many cases, women want to change the size of their breasts after an initial surgery – either making them smaller or larger to achieve the desired cosmetic result.

Correct poorly positioned implants

A common complication among inexperienced surgeons is placing implants too close together or too far apart making them look unnatural, creating an undesirable cosmetic outcome.

Treat capsular contracture

One of the most significant breast implant complications, capsular contracture results in hard, distorted and painful breasts. This can cause an unattractive cosmetic effect, and require a breast revision surgery to correct the issue.

Address implant rippling

To begin your actual breast revision procedure, one of our board-certified anesthesiologists will administer general anesthesia to ensure complete comfort and safety. Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Stark will then re-open your original incision and address any issues that need correcting. For example:

If implant rippling has occurred, resulting in wrinkles and folds that are visible through the skin, Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Stark will carefully remove the implant before placing a new one to ensure it is effectively covered by breast tissue. Newer implants and techniques like fat grafting to the breast can help improve this problem.
If you decide to change the size of your breasts, Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Stark will either make the breast implant “pocket” larger or smaller so it can accommodate your new, ideally-sized implant.
If capsular contracture has occurred, Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Stark will remove the hardened scar tissue and the original implant. They will then place a new implant in such a way as to prevent this complication from recurring.
If your implants are poorly positioned, Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Stark will create new “pockets” for your implants, carefully moving your breasts to a more natural and attractive position. Some patients may need more appropriately sized or shaped implants to help this situation.
